Sister Mahala and Brother Weeps on Becoming Human and Holy

“Sister Mahala, Brother Weeps says that to become human and holy we must endure many trials, experience much suffering, undergo failures and unravelings, even humiliations,” said a young man.

“That’s true,” said Sister Mahala, “many stumbles, tumbles, and falls.’

“Can you show us another way?” asked the man.

“To start a fire you first strike steel against a piece of flint to make a spark and a pearl can only become a pearl by friction as well,” said Sister Mahala. “And there’s the rub.”
