Words to Make Flesh: Mystics & Prophets, No. 1

~ Prayer is less about what we do
and more about what God does
through us, with us, and in us.
~ Dan Miller

Let Your God Love You

Be silent.
Be still. Alone.
Empty
Before your God
Say nothing
Be silent.

Be still.
Let your God

Look upon you.
That is all.
God knows,
Understands,
Loves you with
An enormous Love.

God only wants to
Look upon you
with love.
Quiet.
Still.
Be

Let your God —
Love you.

~ Edwina Gateley, from There Was No Path, So I Trod One

Edwina Gateley’s life has been described by Publisher’s Weekly as “fascinating – an exceptional blend of contemplation and action”.

Her journey has led her to teaching in Africa, founding the Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM), sojourning in the Sahara Desert, spending nine months of prayer in a trailer in the woods, befriending and ministering to street people and women in prostitution – “God’s little ones,” and preaching the Good News: God Is With Us.

Edwina is a poet, theologian, artist, writer, and lay minister. She is a single mom and has been described as a modern day mystic and prophet. [1]

Of her work in the inner city of Chicago in the 1980’s she said: “My congregation was made up of the winos, the drug addicts, the homeless, and the prostitutes. Every encounter, every moment spent sitting in the bars, the brothels, the streets, and the shelters became, for me, Eucharistic events. I knew that God was there.”

  1. Love this! Edwina Gately is one of my favorite poets. I have used this poem as an opening “Guided Prayer” reading it very slowly – it is powerful!
