Consecrating the Common Deed ~ A Life-Line

An authentic spirituality, whatever the religious tradition, is manifested less in the heroic, dramatic, or sensational feat than in the ongoing consecration of the present moment, the common deed, the simple gesture, the considerate thought, the brief pause to listen, the gentle word, the kind act, the daily exercise of little mercies, the hidden bow, the deep sigh, the spontaneous smile, the small offerings of encouragement, the reverent moment of giving thanks, the refusal to look away from fear, the just action, the peal of laughter, and the tiny incarnations of compassion. Stringing these things together makes for a significant life. ~ Dan Miller

Today’s Life-Line is:

People say, what is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time. A pebble cast into a pond causes ripples that spread in all directions. Each one of our thoughts, words and deeds is like that. No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do.

  1. . just what I needed to launch this Monday. So many changes in life, so many losses of various kinds, and seemingly one is , edgy and confounding. not sufficient to the task, or even to identify it. Life feels hot and bothered and worrisome . How calming Dorothy Day, how true your reminder one step at a time, today, not yesterday or tomorrow..thank you.
