In Any Instant — A Life-Line

My explanation of a Life-Line from January 11, 2016

Occasionally The Sacred Braid will feature a Life-Line for the day or the coming week. As I am offering it, a Life-line is meant to point the way, to guide us to safety, to deliver food that nourishes us, or to keep us tethered to reality. A life-line has the capacity to enliven us or awaken us to what matters most. It might break us open or move us deeply or make us laugh or cry. Some days the line might challenge or indict us or give us pause. Other days a Life-line might not be all bells and whistles yet might comfort us, give us hope, make us feel less alone, or simply confirm something we already know. Come back to the Life-line throughout the week. Let it serve the purpose it has been mysteriously given to serve.
Today’s Life-Line is:

There is no less holiness at this time — as you are reading this — than there was on the day the Red Sea parted, or that day in the 30th year, in the 4th month, on the 5th day of the month as Ezekiel was a captive by the river Cheban, when the heavens opened and he saw visions of god. There is no whit less enlightenment under the tree at the end of your street than there was under Buddha’s bo tree…. In any instant the sacred may wipe you with its finger. In any instant the bush may flare, your feet may rise, or you may see a bunch of souls in trees.

~ Annie Dillard, For the Time Being

MINDFUL PRACTICE:
For those who have eyes with which to see, let us behold.
For those who have ears with which to listen, let us hear.
For those who have noses with which to scent, let us smell.
For those who have bodies with which to touch, let us feel.
For those who have tongues with which to taste, let us savor. ~ djm

  1. Lovely! This reminds me of the quote I think from Catherine of Siena “the way to heaven is paved with heaven.” It is all sacred if we have eyes to see. Thanks, Dan!
