A Prayer of the Heart

You, for whom we have so many names,
You, for whom no name will do,
help us learn to live into the name
that you have stitched on the inside of our heart,
the name that only you know
and whisper to us like a lover in the night.

Open the ears of this heart so that we might respond
with the wholeness of who we are in you,
with the fullness of the life which it holds and desires to give away.
Help us not to live puny lives with puny hearts,
but generous lives with generous hearts, giving hearts, wild hearts.

Break our hearts, you the Queen and King of hearts.
Break them open that we might know what makes
your royal heart break and bleed, wince and jump
at the sight and sounds of what we do to one another,
what we fail to do for one another, and what we do to your good earth.

Be gracious with us this day, for we are slow learners.
But we are also eager to learn to listen and love, to see what you see,
to value what is of the essence, to let go of what is unworthy
of the investment of our hours and days, years and lives.

Guide us in the way of truth and life and extravagant love
that we might be people of hope blessed with the opportunity
to participate with your Spirit in making your dream come true
on earth as it is in heaven. May it be so. Amen.
